What are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals in your body and in water that carry an electric charge.
Examples:

  • Sodium (Na⁺)
  • Potassium (K⁺)
  • Calcium (Ca²⁺)
  • Magnesium (Mg²⁺)
  • Chloride (Cl⁻)
  • Bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻)

They dissolve in fluids (blood, water, sweat) and allow electric signals to move through the body.

⚙️ How Electrolytes Work

  1. Hydration balance
    • Sodium + Potassium help regulate how much water your cells absorb or release.
    • This keeps you from getting dehydrated or overly bloated.
  2. Nerve signals
    • Electrolytes act like “wires.”
    • When your brain sends a signal, electrolytes carry the electrical impulse to muscles and nerves.
  3. Muscle contraction
    • Calcium helps muscles contract.
    • Magnesium helps them relax.
    • Without balance → you get cramps or weakness.
  4. pH regulation
    • Bicarbonate and other electrolytes help buffer acids in the body, keeping the pH balanced.

🌊 Electrolytes in Water Systems (like Zen-water)

  • Water enriched with electrolytes isn’t just hydrating—it also helps:
    • Replenish minerals lost in sweat
    • Improve water absorption (faster hydration)
    • Support body pH balance (keeping you slightly alkaline)

That’s why sports drinks, coconut water, or alkaline water systems add electrolytes.
